Spanish Program at St. Teresa of Calcutta
The Spanish Program for grades 4-8 at St. Teresa of Calcutta School is structured around the standards set forth by both the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and Office of Catholic Education of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. These courses are designed to introduce students to the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries. We will stress the four components of the target language; listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Emphasis is given to the acquisition of basic vocabulary, correct pronunciation, and fundamental grammatical structures. The students’ vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension are enhanced through the reading of authentic text from various sources. Students develop their interpersonal communicative skills by creating and presenting dialogues, and writing e‐mails and letters. Throughout the course students will be using the technology to enhance the learning process. As stated by ACTFL, technology is a tool for helping language learners to use the target language in culturally appropriate ways to accomplish authentic tasks. The classroom is an environment in which students are able to be active learners and students are given opportunities to learn aligned with their learning style.
